Little bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium) turns the hillside of Thomson-Fulton Sand Prairie Nature Preserve in Fulton, Illinois into a tapestry of mauve, rose, and burnished gold in fall — diagonal bands of autumn color rolling across the frame, a cluster of yellow stiff goldenrod (Solidago rigida) and white heath aster (Symphyotrichum ericoides) catching the light in the midground, dark trees lining the upper edge. One of the most visually distinctive native grasses of the Midwest sand prairie, doing exactly what it does best when the season turns.
