Stephens State Forest Greeting Card IMG_2892

Two great spangled fritillaries (Speyeria cybele) work the same cluster of wild bergamot (Monarda fistulosa) at Stephens State Forest in Lucas, Iowa — their rich tawny-orange wings with intricate dark patterning vivid against a lush green summer background, lavender bergamot blooms bending under their weight. One of Iowa’s most striking native butterflies, caught sharing a favorite summer wildflower.
