Neal Smith NWR Greeting Card IMG_8589

A flock of red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus) wheels in silhouette against the twilight sky at Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge in Prairie City, Iowa — dozens of birds swirling above a towering golden cloud that glows like molten bronze, prairie grasses dark and still along the ridgeline below. One of those fleeting moments of pure prairie theater that you have to be there — or be very lucky — to witness.
