Muscatine County Greeting Card IMG_2395-2

An ornate box turtle (Terrapene ornata) picks its way through moss, leaf litter, and low vegetation in Muscatine County, Iowa — intricate yellow-striped shell glowing against the forest floor, vivid red eye alert and watchful, orange-spotted front legs in mid-stride. One of Iowa’s most striking reptiles, captured in close-up detail that reveals just how beautifully painted nature’s work really is.
