The story behind the photograph

Large paddle-shaped prairie dock (Silphium terebinthinaceum) leaves rise from a lush early summer prairie at Pellsville Cemetery Prairie Nature Preserve near Rankin, Illinois — white wild quinine (Parthenium integrifolium) clusters and white wild indigo (Baptisia alba) and leadplant (Amorpha canescens) spikes weaving through the dense green midground, the whole plant community at full early-summer abundance. One of the finest high-quality cemetery prairies in Illinois, an island of original prairie plant diversity that survived because the land was never plowed.
