The story behind the photograph
A large gambrel-roofed barn in weathered gray wood stands against a blue spring sky in Scott County, Iowa. Its cupola and gabled dormers catch the afternoon light, with fresh green grass at the base, a budding tree alongside, and a turkey vulture (Cathartes aura) perched atop the roof keeping watch over the surrounding countryside. One of the great old Iowa barn forms, still standing, still being used by the wildlife that has moved in around it.
A meaningful gift for an Iowa history enthusiast, barn lover, rural landscape admirer, or anyone who has a soft spot for the old gambrel-roofed farm structures that still dot the Iowa countryside.
Back of card: Blank, with the Midwest Wilderness Connections logo and the following description along the bottom edge: “Historic barn, Scott County, Iowa. — Midwest Wilderness Connections www.MidwestWildernessConnections.com”
