Meet Jennifer Anderson-Cruz
I am a restoration ecologist based in the American Midwest. My career restoring native ecosystems and addressing the needs of rare plants and wildlife gives my artwork a perspective grounded in ecology, natural history, and a deep respect for place.
I grew up in Iowa along the Upper Mississippi River, where an early fascination with flora and fauna developed into a rewarding career in ecosystem restoration. Over 18 years, I worked for the United States Department of Agriculture's Natural Resources Conservation Service in Illinois, Georgia, and Iowa. I also worked as a watershed coordinator and naturalist for private organizations and local governments.
My academic background includes bachelor's degrees in Environmental Science and Biology, a master's degree in Biology, and doctoral study in Ecology, Evolutionary, and Organismal Biology.
Why Midwest Wilderness Matters
The American Midwest receives relatively little attention compared with mountains, deserts, rainforests, oceans, and seas, yet its native ecosystems are among the nation's most endangered. Through botanical relief, nature photography, greeting cards, and other artwork, I aim to help people see the region's ecological stories, scars, resilience, and beauty more clearly.
Botanical Bas Relief Plaster Casting
My intense interest in native plant functions and ecology led me to botanical plaster casting in 2022. Since then, I have continued refining my process and expanding my techniques.
For many pieces, I collect native plants from cherished Midwest locations and arrange them to reflect their natural form, ecological role, or the character of the place where they grow. I also cast garden plants, bouquets, and bespoke pieces allowing customers to preserve meaningful flowers as lasting keepsakes and commissioned artwork.
