The story behind the photograph

An eastern tiger swallowtail (Papilio glaucus) spreads its wings in close-up over wild bergamot (Monarda fistulosa) at Rochester Cemetery Prairie Oak Savanna in Rochester, Iowa. Bold yellow-and-black striped wings fill the frame, iridescent blue-green scaling gleaming along the lower wing edges, lavender bergamot blooms soft and luminous in the background. One of the Midwest’s most iconic butterflies, photographed at the height of summer on one of its favorite native wildflowers.
