The story behind the photograph
A spicebush swallowtail (Papilio troilus) feeds from wild bergamot (Monarda fistulosa) at Roberts Cemetery Savanna Nature Preserve in Litchfield, Illinois. Its deep blue-black wings are trimmed with iridescent blue-green scaling, perched atop a lavender bloom in a lush tangle of savanna vegetation glowing in summer green. One of the Midwest’s most elegant butterflies, visiting one of its most beloved native wildflowers.
A meaningful gift for a butterfly enthusiast, pollinator advocate, prairie and savanna lover, or anyone who has ever paused on a summer trail to watch a swallowtail work through a patch of bee balm.
Back of card: Blank, with the Midwest Wilderness Connections logo and the following description along the bottom edge: “Spicebush Swallowtail on wild bergamot. Roberts Cemetery Savanna, Litchfield, Illinois. — Midwest Wilderness Connections www.MidwestWildernessConnections.com”
