The story behind the photograph

A small herd of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) stands alert along a snowy prairie ridgeline at Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge in Prairie City, Iowa. Their tawny coats are warm against the pale blue winter sky, ears up, eyes scanning, with dried grasses poking through the snow around them. A quintessential Iowa winter wildlife moment, wide and open and still.

A thoughtful birthday card, thank-you, or just-because gift for a deer enthusiast, Iowa prairie admirer, wildlife lover, or anyone who finds the sight of deer on a winter ridgeline quietly, completely perfect. The festive version adds a playful option for holiday greetings.

Back of card: Blank, with the Midwest Wilderness Connections logo and the following description along the bottom edge: “White-tailed Deer. Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge, Prairie City, Iowa. — Midwest Wilderness Connections www.MidwestWildernessConnections.com”
