The story behind the photograph

Little bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium) turns the hillside of Thomson-Fulton Sand Prairie Nature Preserve in Fulton, Illinois into a tapestry of mauve, rose, and burnished gold in fall. Diagonal bands of autumn color roll across the frame, a cluster of yellow stiff goldenrod (Solidago rigida) and white heath aster (Symphyotrichum ericoides) catching the light in the midground, dark trees lining the upper edge.
