The story behind the photograph

Cutleaf toothwort (Cardamine concatenata) in close-up at Shady Rest Park in Monticello, Illinois. Clusters of small, delicate white four-petaled flowers perch atop a whorl of deeply cut leaves, the soft dark woodland floor blurred behind them into a rich green background. One of the earliest of all Illinois woodland spring ephemerals, here and gone in a matter of weeks, photographed at the precise moment it is most itself.

A meaningful gift for a spring ephemeral enthusiast, woodland wildflower lover, Illinois nature admirer, or anyone who knows the particular pleasure of finding the first toothwort of the season on a March woodland trail.

Back of card: Blank, with the Midwest Wilderness Connections logo and the following description along the bottom edge: “Cutleaf toothwort (Cardamine concatenata). Shady Rest Park, Monticello, Illinois. — Midwest Wilderness Connections www.MidwestWildernessConnections.com”
