The story behind the photograph

Gray-headed coneflowers (Ratibida pinnata), black-eyed Susans (Rudbeckia hirta), purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea), and wild bergamot (Monarda fistulosa) crowd the frame at Robert C. Porter Family Park in Champaign, Illinois. A restored prairie in full summer bloom is set against a dramatic post-storm sky of towering pink-tinged clouds, the whole scene luminous in the soft diffused light that only arrives after a storm passes. An extraordinary convergence of peak wildflower season and peak summer sky.

A meaningful gift for a prairie lover, storm sky enthusiast, Illinois nature admirer, or anyone who has ever watched a thunderstorm roll through a restored prairie and been amazed at how alive everything looks in the aftermath.
