The story behind the photograph

Goldenrod (Solidago sp.) and joe-pye weed fill the understory beneath spreading oaks at Parklands Merwin Preserve in Illinois. The late afternoon sun breaks through the canopy in a warm burst of backlit gold, the whole savanna understory vibrating with end-of-summer richness and light. One of the finest examples of an Illinois river valley oak savanna, photographed at the moment when the season is at its most abundant and the light at its most generous.

A meaningful gift for an oak savanna enthusiast, Illinois nature admirer, goldenrod lover, or anyone who has ever walked through a restored savanna in late summer and felt how alive it is.

Back of card: Blank, with the Midwest Wilderness Connections logo and the following description along the bottom edge: “Oak savanna understory at sunset. Parklands Merwin Preserve, Illinois. — Midwest Wilderness Connections www.MidwestWildernessConnections.com”
