The story behind the photograph

An ornate box turtle (Terrapene ornata) picks its way through moss, leaf litter, and low vegetation in Muscatine County, Iowa. Its intricate yellow-striped shell glows against the forest floor, its vivid red eye alert and watchful, and its orange-spotted front legs are caught in mid-stride. One of Iowa’s most striking reptiles, captured in close-up detail that reveals just how beautifully painted nature’s work really is.

A meaningful gift for a reptile enthusiast, turtle lover, Iowa nature admirer, or anyone who has ever spent ten minutes crouched on a trail watching a box turtle decide whether or not to cross.
