The story behind the photograph

Virginia bluebells (Mertensia virginica) and spring beauty (Claytonia virginica) carpet the forest floor at Lodge Park in Monticello, Illinois, photographed from ground level looking up at towering tree trunks against a vivid blue spring sky. The blue tubular bluebell flowers and pink spring beauty blooms fill the foreground while bare canopy branches and open sky fill the frame above. An ephemeral peak that lasts only a few weeks each April, when these two species bloom together in the best floodplain forests of the Midwest.

A meaningful gift for a spring ephemeral enthusiast, woodland wildflower lover, Illinois nature admirer, or anyone who has ever timed a visit to a floodplain forest just right and found it carpeted in blue and white.

Back of card: Blank, with the Midwest Wilderness Connections logo and the following description along the bottom edge: “Virginia bluebells (Mertensia virginica) and spring beauty (Claytonia virginica).
