The story behind the photograph

Wild bergamot (Monarda fistulosa) in soft lavender-pink bloom mingles with silvery-white prairie sage (Artemisia ludoviciana) across a rolling hillside at Lau Wildlife Management Unit in Hancock County, Iowa — hoary vervain (Verbena stricta) visible in the distance, big summer cumulus clouds building over the prairie horizon. A midsummer Iowa prairie at full abundance, the kind of plant community that takes decades of careful management to achieve.

A meaningful choice for an Iowa nature admirer, native plant enthusiast, prairie restoration supporter, or anyone who has walked a restored Iowa prairie in July and breathed in the bergamot.

Back of card: Blank, with the Midwest Wilderness Connections logo and the following description along the bottom edge: “Wild bergamot (Monarda fistulosa), prairie sage (Artemisia ludoviciana), & hoary vervain (Verbena stricta).
