The story behind the photograph

A great egret (Ardea alba) in close-up portrait at Green Island Wildlife Management Area in Green Island, Iowa. Pure white plumage and a long graceful neck fill the frame against a lush soft-focus green wetland background, the yellow-orange bill and pale green loral skin of breeding plumage clearly visible. One of the Upper Mississippi River Valley’s most stately wading birds, photographed with the quiet patience and proximity that reveals just how striking they are up close.

A meaningful gift for a birder, heron and egret enthusiast, wetland lover, or anyone who has ever watched a great egret stand motionless in the shallows and marveled at its patience.
