The story behind the photograph

Stiff sunflowers (Helianthus pauciflorus) and Indiangrass (Sorghastrum nutans) tower overhead against a saturated deep blue sky at Fairmount Cemetery Prairie in Davenport, Iowa. Photographed from ground level looking up, the tall grasses and yellow flowers fill the entire vertical frame, a worm’s-eye view of a bluff-top remnant prairie in full late-summer abundance. One of the most dramatically composed images in the catalog, and one of the finest surviving examples of a Mississippi River bluff prairie habitat.

A meaningful gift for a prairie enthusiast, native grass lover, Iowa nature admirer, or anyone who has ever lain down in a tallgrass prairie and looked straight up into it.

Back of card: Blank, with the Midwest Wilderness Connections logo and the following description along the bottom edge: “Stiff sunflower (Helianthus pauciflorus) and Indiangrass (Sorghastrum nutans).
