The story behind the photograph

A little glassywing skipper (Pompeius verna) perches at the edge of a brilliant purple milkweed (Asclepias purpurascens) bloom at Stephens State Forest in Lucas, Iowa. The densely packed magenta-pink florets fill most of the frame in vivid color, the small tawny skipper poised at the flower’s edge against a soft green background. One of the rarer native milkweeds of the Midwest, paired here with one of the subtler but most charismatic of the prairie skippers.

A meaningful gift for a skipper enthusiast, milkweed advocate, prairie lover, or anyone who appreciates the small and easily overlooked wonders of a midsummer Iowa prairie.
