The story behind the photograph

Two great spangled fritillaries (Speyeria cybele) work the same cluster of wild bergamot (Monarda fistulosa) at Stephens State Forest in Lucas, Iowa. Their rich tawny-orange wings with intricate dark patterning are vivid against a lush green summer background, lavender bergamot blooms bending under their weight. One of Iowa’s most striking native butterflies, caught sharing a favorite summer wildflower.

A meaningful gift for a butterfly enthusiast, pollinator advocate, prairie and woodland lover, or anyone who has ever watched two fritillaries jostling for space on a bergamot bloom and smiled at the abundance of it.

Back of card: Blank, with the Midwest Wilderness Connections logo and the following description along the bottom edge: “Great spangled fritillaries sipping from wild bergamot (Monarda fistulosa).
