Lau Wildlife Area Greeting Card IMG_2143-4

Wild bergamot (Monarda fistulosa) in soft lavender-pink bloom mingles with silvery-white prairie sage (Artemisia ludoviciana) across a rolling hillside at Lau Wildlife Management Unit in Hancock County, Iowa — blue vervain (Verbena hastata) visible in the distance, big summer cumulus clouds building over the prairie horizon. A midsummer Iowa prairie at full abundance, the kind of plant community that takes decades of careful management to achieve.
