Lodge Park Greeting Card IMG_134133

Virginia bluebells (Mertensia virginica) and spring beauty (Claytonia virginica) carpet the forest floor at Lodge Park in Monticello, Illinois — photographed from ground level looking up at towering tree trunks against a vivid blue spring sky, the blue tubular bluebell flowers and pink spring beauty blooms filling the foreground while bare canopy branches and open sky fill the frame above. An ephemeral peak that lasts only a few weeks each April, when these two species bloom together in the best floodplain forests of the Midwest.
