Midwest Wilderness Connections Eco-brief: The Eagle Eye

Bald eagles have a powerful sense of sight that can see a fish from well over a mile away. Bald eagle eyes also reduce glare, similar to polarizing lenses used in people's sunglasses. This is an especially important attribute to the bald eagle, which hunts over glare producing water. The Bald eagle's sight capabilities are so great that it's used as the standard to which the sight of all other organisms is compared. This is the root of the common phrase "Eagle eye."
