The story behind the photograph

Prairie blazingstar (Liatris pycnostachya) spikes reach upward in purple at Wolters Prairie State Preserve in Butler County, Iowa. Gray-headed coneflowers (Ratibida pinnata) droop their yellow petals in the foreground, white boneset (Eupatorium perfoliatum) catches the last raking light at the right, and every grass stem and spider web is lit up by the intense directional glow of late-day sun. A peak-summer Iowa prairie in the kind of light that makes even the most familiar wildflowers look extraordinary.

A meaningful gift for a prairie enthusiast, golden-hour photography lover, Iowa nature admirer, or anyone who has ever stood in a tallgrass prairie at sunset and understood immediately why people fight to protect these places.
