The story behind the photograph

Compass plant (Silphium laciniatum) and prairie wildflowers stand in dark silhouette against a blazing sunset sky at Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge in Prairie City, Iowa. Storm clouds are ignited in layers of deep orange, gold, and bruised blue-purple, with the sun sinking behind the ridgeline in a display that stops you mid-step on any trail. This is the Iowa prairie at its most dramatic and most magnificent.

A meaningful gift for a prairie enthusiast, landscape photography lover, Iowa nature admirer, or anyone who has ever watched the sun go down over a tallgrass prairie and felt the whole world go quiet.
