Early morning sun catches the face of a crumbling barn in Jasper County, Iowa — its cupola still standing, a frost-covered tree growing wild from its open doorway. The surrounding crop field glitters with frost, and a foggy backdrop softens the horizon into pale gray. Many holes puncture the roof, yet the barn holds its ground in the cold late-winter light, beautiful in its slow surrender.
