MWC Eco-briefs: Animal Track Trivia

What animal left these tracks on a sand road in northwestern Illinois? Scroll below to reveal the culprit.

Here's a photo hint 🤔

The correct answer is a snapping turtle! Female common snapping turtles haul out of waterbodies to lay eggs in a nest she'll dig in well-drained soils, especially those containing lots of sand. Their nesting movements typically occur in May and June, depending on where you live in the Midwest. Many other aquatic turtle species also make upland nesting excursions and are often hit by cars along the way. If you want to assist a turtle attempting to cross a road, first ensure you can stop safely. Then, you can help the turtle cross the road by putting it down in the direction it was going.
