The answer is...five different species of frogs!
- The loud clicking call is the Blanchard's cricket frog, which reaches the size of a quarter.
- The melodic trill is the eastern gray tree frog, which can reach the size of a golf ball.
- The Cope's gray treefrog sounds similar to the eastern gray treefrog, but higher pitched and faster. It too reaches the size of a golf ball.
- The sporadic call that sounds like off-tune plucking of banjo strings is the green frog, which can reach the size of a softball.
- Lastly, the deep bellowing call is the American bullfrog, which can reach the size of a dessert plate.
How do the smaller frogs' calls drown out the larger frogs' calls? I'll cover that in an upcoming blog post!
