Frogs and toads are collectively referred to as Anurans. Anurans can breathe with lungs and through their skin. Highly aquatic anurans make greater use of respiration through their skin. More terrestrial anurans, such as this American toad, make greater use of respiration via the lungs. Buccal pumping draws air in through the nostrils, then the nostrils close as the air in the bucal cavity is pushed into the lungs.
