Midwest Wilderness Connections Eco-brief: Carolina Anemone

Finding Carolina anemone (Anemone caroliniana) blooming in the spring is a special treat. It is a very short plant with white or blue flowers and fine leaves that fade into the background as more robust prairie plants hit the stage. This species typically grows in dry prairie or savanna habitats with rocky, sandy, or gravelly soil. The openess of these prairie, savannna, or glade habitats is primarily driven by the doughtiness of the soils or shallow to bedrock depths. Consequently, overuse of fire in such habitats is a concern. Not all fires are good for prairie. Managers should only carry out well planned prescribed fire to meet a very specific objective based on a thorough site evaluation.
