MWC Eco-brief: Wood Duck Shenanigans

The male wood duck has long been admired for its highly decorative plumage. This duck nests in tree holes that form where a branch has broken off, exposing heartwood that decays to form a cavity. Wood ducks also use nest boxes. As with yesterday's post about the Canada goose, female wood ducks may dump their eggs in another female's nest. This is especially true if nest boxes are too close to one another. To reduce the chance of egg dumping, nest boxes should be installed out of sight from the nearest box and in well camouflaged locations.
